Ako Castle

Ako Castle

It is in Ako city and designated as a national historical site and national scenic beauty. The castle is a deformed Rinkaku style, of which central castle is surrounded by two moats. Also it is a coastal plain castle which was very rare for modern castles in Japanese history. Although the scale of the castle is small, its name, Ako, is very famous because of the 47 Ako samurai (warriors). In the area of the samurai residence (warriors residence) in and right outside of the castle, there area the stone monuments that show the ruins of warriors' houses. Also there are 47 stone statues at Oishi Shrine in the Sannomaru (the area of the third moats). Many people still visit the remains of OISHI Kuranosuke's residence. The Ninomaru (the second area) is currently under maintenance. There is a "Ako Gishi Festival" for the 47 samurai held every year on December 14.
