Situated opposing to Satsuma Peninsula, Osumi Peninsula is a peninsula located at a southeastern part of Kagoshima prefecture. The sothern edge of the peninsula is Cape Sata with the eastern and southern shores of the peninsula facing the Pacific Ocean. There are inlets such as Shibushi Bay, the bay with an oil storage station, and Uchinoura Bay, a bay with a rocket center. At the center of Osumi Peninsula lies Kanoya city which used to have three air bases during the Pacific War. From the base, the greatest number of special attack units made a sortie.There is still an old battlefield relating to the special attack units remained in Kanoya city. Cape Sata is a cape located at the southern edge of Osumi Peninsula and is also the southernmost part of Kyushu Island. Subtropical plants such as Japanese sago palms and Chinese fan palms grow gregariously.
